The Chief of Police justifies the use of a tazer on an 8 year old girl by saying they could have used their guns or batons, essentially. What restraint.

7 Tips On How To Deal With Racially Insensitive Friends

“Even I’m blacker than you are” is not something that a black chick wants to hear from her white friend. And yet, that’s exactly what a friend of mine said to me in high school.  I guess she thought it was funny, but trust me, I wasn’t laughing…It’s maddening, it’s frustrating, but if you’re finding yourself in these situations and you don’t know what to do, check out these seven tips on how to deal with racially insensitive friends. This could mean the difference between maintaining a friendship and severing it.

Nyarvirazi the Were-lioness
Origins- Rwanda (South East African maybe)
Nyarvirazi was a chieftain daughter or a the last born princess of a King. One day when venturing out into the wilderness she got lost as day turned to night she became tired, hungry and thristy looking for a way back. She found cup of water sitting atop of a tree stump and drank from it.
The water turned out to be urine from a lion left there by a witch or jujuman for a ritual that was to be performed under the full moon. Nyarvirazi could noticed that her senses were enhanced  and as she made her way back home she had a craving for goat once seeing some she chagred after them turning into a lion and ate them. After devouring the goat she turned back into a human and ran back home, this became a habit on every full moon it wasn’t long until her brother became suspicious and saw her transformation and told the family about it.
Nyarvirazi warned them all to keep her transformation a secrect especially from her husband. When she had a baby the midwives joked about the baby no having claws, her husband wanted to know what they were talking about after many months of suspicion and threatened everyone with a spear which he ended up using on Nyarvirazi and the midwives and also the baby. Nyarvirazi transformed into a lioness and bit off his arm she called for other lions to appear and they ate him.
Nyarvirazi took her baby and went off with the Lions to become their Queen and Goddess thus keeping her family’s home safe from lions, she occasionally returns to her father’s village.

The Adventures of Prince Achmen.1926. German. The oldest surviving animated film in history.

Nonono, you don’t understand how AWESOME this movie is
because it’s not done by a big production firm, or someone with a name as big as Walt Disney, no
the writer and “mind” behind this film was a WOMAN
yes, my dear tumblr peeps, the very first trick animator in the world was a young German woman who had an idea, and enough friends and time to make a feature-length animated film. And it took her three years
because the way this movie (and some shorter works she actually did before Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed) are done is really, really complex. You see those leaves, and the hair of the figures? Yes.
That’s hand-cut paper.
Lotte Reiniger - that’s her name, my friends - always loved the art beind the Chinese shadow puppetry, and after she heard a lecture by Paul Wegener (famous vor the early movies Der Golem and Der Student von Prag) about the possibilites of animated movies, she wanted to combine these two things.
And guys, how she combined it…
Most of the puppets and scenerey she made all by herself. Her friends set up a special table that was lighted from underneath, and in the later movies she would even change the colours of the background mid-scene to change the atmosphere. Above it was a camera, shooting photos of the scenes that she moved milimetre for milimetre for those 16 pictures per second she needed for her movie.
Which makes Die Abenteuer von Prinz Achmed not only the first animated feature-length movie, but also the first stop-motion movie.

An Indian woman, a Japanese woman, and a Syrian woman, all training to be doctors at Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia, 1880s. (Image courtesy Legacy Center, Drexel University College of Medicine Archives, Philadelphia, PA. Image #p0103) (x)
The Indian woman, Dr. Anandi Gopal Joshi, was the first Indian woman to earn a degree in Western medicine, and also believed to be the first Hindu woman to set foot on American soil.
The Japanese woman, Dr. Kei Okami, was the first Japanese woman to obtain a degree in Western Medicine.
The Syrian woman is Dr. Sabat Islambooly.  Her name is spelled incorrectly on that photograph.
For those interested, here’s more information on other women of color who attended and graduated from Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia in the past, with a focus on the Japanese-American women they accepted during the US WW2 internment of Japanese-Americans.
